The second my foot landed on the creaky kitchen floorboard the next morning, the grown-up conversation coming from the living room shifted into âlow tones.â Momâs and Dadâs whispers werenât the âdonât wake the kidsâ kind. This was serious talk.
I shuffled toward the refrigerator. Maybe if I hummed a little, they wouldnât think Iâd noticed. I swung open the fridge door. Milk and ⦠cold air. I rubbed my face to wake myself up.
Wait. It wasnât Saturday. Dad was home. On a Monday.
I grabbed the half-empty milk jug and yawned loudly. Fair warning, Mom and Dad. Time for me to get ready for school.
âMorning, Jack,â my mom called softly.
Dad didnât even say anything. They went back to murmuring, so I played it cool.
âMorning,â I mumbled, closing the fridge door. I picked the box of Corn Pops out of the cereal lineup on top of the refrigerator.
I strained to hear them. Low tones could mean different things. Birthday presents. Unpaid bills. Even ⦠that someone died!
I set the milk and cereal on the counter and tiptoed toward the doorway to the living room. I cleared my throat to announce my impending arrival.
Two words met me there.
âLaid off,â Dad said. The words dropped like rocksâone, twoâinto a still pond.
Thereâd been times before when my dad didnât have enough work. We had moved from my grandparentsâ farmhouse to the suburbs so heâd be closer to more construction jobs. I wondered if weâd left our other home for nothing.
My parents were sitting next to each other on the couch. Dad was hunched over with his head in his hands. Mom had her hand on his back. She looked up at me with a smile that didnât match the dark circles around her eyes.
My stomach dropped. Sometimes itâs better when kids donât hear things.
